Ft Campbell MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) provides quality community activities to the large military population supported by Fort Campbell. The concept of MWR started way back before the institution's inception right in the battlefields of World War I, where sisters of the Salvation Army and volunteers for the Red Cross tended to the needs of soldiers, serving as their primary source of morale, welfare and recreation. Everything virtually went to a halt, however, when the war ceased and the programs were shelved until 1940, when the Adjutant General's Office established the Morale Division, now known as Special Services. Today, the Ft Campbell MWR continues to offer services that help reduce stress as well as improve skills and foster self-confidence within one's self and camaraderie among fellow soldiers, and thus catering to their morale, welfare and recreation. These efforts contribute to the much needed retention of valuable and talented people in the Armed Forces by reminding them that there are people who care and are willing to support them throughout their service in defending their country. Family recreational activities such as camping, fishing and hiking around the Clarksville and surrounding areas are facilitated by the Ft Campbell MWR by working closely with local RV parks, campgrounds and fishing venues to secure valuable discounts and additional benefits for members of the Armed Services and their families stationed at Ft Campbell. The Ft Campbell MWR has also championed the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) program that supports the overall quality of life for single Soldiers. BOSS identifies well-being issues and concerns by recommending improvements through the chain of command and assists single soldiers in identifying and planning for recreational and leisure activities. Additionally, BOSS provides single soldiers the opportunity to participate in and contribute to their respective communities.
